GOVERNORS

The Governors of Oxford School support the work of the school and have a general responsibility for the overall strategy of the school and its standards.

The Governors of Oxford School are particularly proud to serve a school where “achievement for all” is given real meaning; we all share a set of values based on the school being at the heart of its community and securing the best possible standards across a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum for all our young people.

We are pleased at the opportunities that Business and Enterprise Specialist School status and local partnerships (such as the Isis Partnership with local primary schools and the 14-19 consortium) bring to our students and the community.

The Governing body is made up of representatives of the Staff, Parents, Partners, Local Authority, the Community and Associates (including students).

The governing body conducts most of it work through 4 main committees:

(in addition there are committees to manage various aspects of ‘appeals’ procedures)

Each committee meets each term in a schedule that relates to meetings of the full governing body. The full governing body sees itself as setting the strategic vision of the school and it is though its committees that it develops the ‘engine room’ for effective governance as far as its ‘support and challenge’ role is concerned and in terms of dealing with its many policy related responsibilities; they have clear terms of reference (which are formally reviewed each year). Each governor volunteers to participate in at least one committee. Each committee has a rolling schedule of policy reviews and each committee invites relevant members of staff to make presentations on key issues.

The Chairs of each committee together with the Chair of the school’s governing body, the Head Teacher and the school’s deputy headteacher's meet regularly to review performance and strategy and to agree on the agenda for the next full governors meeting; they also discuss any issues that need to be shared and developed in committee (or if appropriate in specially formed task groups).

Each governor is also formally linked to a faculty and has regular meetings with their faculty for communication and monitoring purposes.  Individual governors also take particular responsibility for governance in relation to Special Needs, Child Protection and linking with the Local Authority.

The governing body is proud of the work that staff do to bring innovation, high achievement and new learning opportunities to all pupils in the school, and how they extend and make coherent opportunities for learning and engagement to all in the community.

Effective schools are reflective organisations and the Governing Body plays its full part in the school’s self-evaluation process so that we can always continue to further improve our performance.
